During my
career as a teaching professional I have given
literally thousands of golf lessons to golfers of
all abilities. Some of the most common faults and
my opinion of the essential
elements of their cure follow.
GRIP
Look at the top
players in the world and without exception you
will notice these players have a near
perfect grip. A fault in the grip will cause
problems in the takeaway and then have to be
compensated for with a bad movement later in
the swing. When you initially change your
grip it will feel uncomfortable and often
make things worse for the first practice session.
You have to be brave and stick with it. You
will not reach your true potential with
a bad grip.
SETUP
From my
experience this is the main area which causes
most problems. Bad alignment is very common. If
the lines across the body aim too far right or
left of the target you are already in trouble.
A golfer that
aims his feet, hips, and shoulders left of their
target is described as being "open". The
result is to swing the golf club along the lines
of the body ie out-in. The resulting shot will be
a slice or a pull dependant on the clubface at
impact. If the golfer's set up is
"closed" ie aiming the lines across the
body too far right, the opposite will happen and a
hook or push will be the result.
Look again at the
top players and notice how they set up
perfectly with the lines across their body running
parallel to the target. Next time you go to the
range pick a target, concentrate on your set up,
place your club across the line of your feet, step
back and see where you are aiming.
